  • Chris Black and Guy Cluver started Lupa Osteria in Hillcrest and successfully expanded into a franchise after a partial buyout from Famous Brands in 2016. Chris continued to run Lupa with Famous Brands until 2022 after he transferred his remaining stake. The Lupa brand will always be close to Chris’s heart but he is excited for the chance to fully immerse himself in a whole new brand and explore every avenue of his creativity. The Black Rabbit is 100% Chris Black and has his unrestrained stamp all over it.

  • Not at this stage but the Lupa brand will continue under the ownership and stewardship of the Famous Brands team. Chris Black no longer has any involvement with Lupa.

  • Yes, our team is relishing the opportunity to get creative in this new chapter and have undergone re-training in the Black Rabbit way.

  • No - the menu has been completely recrafted by Chris as a celebration of the seasons; cooking the food he loves with his own flair. The menu will change every season and whilst there are still pizzas and pasta on the menu, they will be very different from what is on a Lupa menu unless they are Italian classics.

  • You can expect contemporary classic European Bistro style with dishes ranging across cultures. We simply serve food we love and that we know you will love. Our focus is on ingredients and preparation, not simply style. The Black Rabbit allows us to be unrestrained by a theme.

  • Yes! but with a difference… Our pizza menu has been completely reimagined. We are planning to offer most of our pizzas on a Monday at R85.

  • No, but we will have weekly lunch specials so keep an eye on the blackboard. Our lunch patrons can expect to be wowed and spoiled even more. The lunch menu will offer great value.

  • Yes, we are a family restaurant and firmly believe in the importance of families dining together. The kids' menu will also offer delicious and healthy children’s meals every day of the week.

  • We will consider private functions provided they reserve the entire restaurant. The very essence of a neighbourhood restaurant is that it is always open for guests to both book and just pop in.
